MID TN EXCAVATOR
Site Preparation Contractor in Middle Tennessee
Middle Tennessee’s residential and commercial excavation and site work — from raw land to build-ready ground, one crew, every phase.
JD Lee Excavating handles site preparation for raw land residential builds and commercial development across Humphreys, Dickson, Hickman, Perry, Maury, Montgomery, and Davidson counties.
We bring the equipment, the experience, and the licensed capacity to get the ground right the first time. Every foundation, every building pad, every driveway starts with ground that was prepared correctly. Cut corners on site prep and everything built on top of it pays the price — settling foundations, failed drainage, washed-out pads, and septic systems that don’t perform.
Commercial Site Preparation
Commercial site prep has less room for error. Pad elevations, drainage grades, and subgrade compaction have to hit tolerances that hold up to engineering review and inspection. We work directly from civil drawings, coordinate with your engineer and GC, and keep the earthwork phase on schedule so the rest of the project isn’t sitting idle waiting on dirt. Our equipment fleet runs multiple machines on site simultaneously — no bottlenecks waiting on a single piece of iron to finish before the next phase can start.
Residential Site Preparation
Building on raw land means starting from scratch — trees, brush, uneven terrain, no utilities, no access. We take that raw acreage through every phase of site preparation so your builder can break ground on solid, level, properly drained ground. That means clearing the land, establishing grade, cutting the driveway, setting drainage, and compacting the building pad — all coordinated as a single project rather than pieced together across three or four separate contractors. One crew, one schedule, one point of contact from the first dozer pass to the final grade.
Building Pad Construction
A building pad is only as good as what’s underneath it. We excavate to proper depth, remove organic material and unsuitable soil, bring in structural fill where needed, and compact in lifts using purpose-built compaction equipment — padfoot compactor and smooth drum roller. The result is a pad that holds grade, supports the load placed on it, and doesn’t shift, settle, or surprise you after the foundation is poured. This matters for homes, shops, barns, commercial buildings, and any structure where settling isn’t an option.
Drainage & Grading
Water does what gravity tells it to do. If the site isn’t graded to move water away from the structure and off the property, it will find its own path — and that path is usually toward the foundation, under the slab, or pooling where you least want it. We grade every site with drainage as a primary consideration, not an afterthought. Swales, positive drainage slopes, culverts, and outlet points are planned from the start and built into the grade rather than retrofitted after problems show up.
Rough & Final Grading
Rough grading shapes the overall site — establishing elevation, moving large volumes of material, cutting and filling to get the land close to design grade. Final grading brings the surface to finished tolerances — smooth, true, and ready for the next trade. We handle both phases in sequence so the site transitions cleanly from earthwork to construction without gaps, delays, or a second mobilization.
Subgrade Preparation
Subgrade is the foundation beneath the foundation. Whether it’s going under concrete, asphalt, or structural fill, the subgrade has to be stable, uniform, and compacted to the density the project requires. We proof-roll, compact, and verify subgrade conditions before anything gets placed on top — because problems in the subgrade don’t stay in the subgrade. They migrate upward and show up as cracking, settling, and surface failure months or years down the road.

WHY JD LEE EXCAVATING
Unlike most small, one-man operations, JD Lee Excavating runs a full fleet of heavy equipment — giving us the capacity to handle large-scale residential and commercial projects without delay, without rental dependency, and without sending the wrong machine to the wrong job.
Our fleet includes bulldozers with rippers, excavators with heavy-duty bucket attachments, pans and scrapers, haul trucks, low boys, and dump trucks. For compaction work — particularly on building pads and pond construction — we run both a padfoot compactor and a smooth drum roller, equipment that most local operators simply don’t own. We also run a GPS-based grade control system for precision earthwork on projects where tolerances matter.
We’re capable and agile enough to turn around smaller, local jobs quickly. But what sets JD Lee apart in the Middle Tennessee market is the depth of iron behind every project — owned, maintained, and ready to work.
